1. Experiencing the magic of Cirque du Soleil under the Big Top.
Did you know that Cirque du Soleil was born in Montreal, Quebec? Their first official production was a success in 1984. Since then, they’ve been creating numerous shows year after year. Every spring, they premiere a new show at the Old Port of Montreal, that will later go on world tour.
This year is the turn for ECHO, a beautiful show that explores the connection between humans, animals and the planet. My favorite part is the dragonfly act. It’s incredible how they perform all the acrobatics while being suspended only by their hair.
Tickets are less expensive if you book them for the afternoon show. Also, if you buy 4 tickets, you get a 25% discount. If you want to live a luxury experience, the VIP package grants you access to the VIP suite appetizers, an exclusive bar, and the best seats. Plus, you could even meet some of the artists. and take photos with them.

Quick Details:
Dates: From May 21th to August 16th.
Where: Jacques- Cartier Quay, de la Commune Street Est.
Tickets: Available on the official Cirque du Soleil website.
Just a heads up: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links. If you use them to book a tour, I’ll earn a small commission to support my work at zero extra cost to you. I only recommend experiences I truly love!
2. Jet Boating on Lachine Rapids.
This is, without a doubt, the shot of adrenaline you need while visiting the city. The Lachine Rapids are famous for being intense and getting on the Saute-moutons jet boats is the ultimate way to experience them. Be prepared because you will get completely wet from head to toe. You’ll laugh and have tons of fun while riding the massive waves.
It’s a totally unforgettable summer experience. They offer three different boat tours and I highly recommend the 1-hour tour. The departure is from the Clock Tower pier. You’ll pass the Habitat 67, the Victoria Bridge, the Champlain Bridge, and Nun’s island before getting to the rapids. Bring a change of clothes, sandals and a towel. You will get drenched, and I mean it. They’ll provide you with life jackets, and ponchos. You bring your adventurous spirit and your swimsuit.

Quick Details:
Dates: From May to September (depending of weather conditions).
Where: Clock Tower Quay St. Old Port of Montreal.
Tickets: through GetYourGuide for flexible booking and free cancellation.
3. Strolling & grabbing a coffee in Old Montreal.
Enjoy the beauty of Old Montreal, making you feel as if you just stepped into Europe. With its cobblestones streets, gorgeous buildings, nice restaurants and cozy cafes, it’s the perfect place to savor both local and international food. It’s also a great spot to find your souvenirs, or simply pause and grab a coffee.

Quick Details:
Where: My top recommendations:
- Crew Collective & cafe
- Tommy Café
- Café Olimpico
- Le Petit Dep
4. Dining on a terrace in Old Port of Montreal.
The number of spots to eat in Montreal is infinite; you can find food from every corner of the world. While you can choose whatever you prefer, you definitely have to book a table on a terrace in Old Montreal. The ones at street level are amazing for enjoying the good weather, the cobblestones streets, and the vibe of the people walking around.
However, if you can find one with a panoramic view, I highly recommend going just before sunset to have that skyline and the St. Lawrence River all to yourself while tasting delicious flavors cooked by renowned chefs. Below I share my top 5 recommendations; my favorite is Terrasse William Grey. It’s a little bit expensive but believe me, you won’t regret visiting it. Make sure to always make a reservation in advance.

Quick Details:
Where (My top 5 recommendations):
- Terrasse William Gray
- Terrasse Perché
- Maggie Oakes
- Jardin Nelson
5. Enjoying the Loto- Québec fireworks festival.
Yes, Montreal hosts a world-class fireworks festival from July to August. Every year different countries participate, bringing their magic to our weekends. You can enjoy the show from various spots around the city, such as the Old Port of Montreal, the Jacques-Cartier bridge, au pied du courant village, a terrace, a boat cruise, or even a kayak tour on the St. Lawrence River. However, the absolute best place to see the entire show is from the grandstands at La Ronde. Yes, the amusement park I wrote about in point 11.
The fireworks are launched from Lac des Dauphins and last for 30 minutes. It’s truly amazing to see how they are perfectly synchronized with the music (something you can’t hear from the other locations). I strongly recommend buying a day pass to the park + a gold seat for the fireworks. You can have fun on the rides during the day, and then take your seat to enjoy one of the most prestigious pyrotechnic competitions in the world.
Quick Details:
Where: Île Sainte-Hélène, 22 Chem. Mcdonald.
When: July 2, 9, 12, 16, 23, 26, 30 and August 6.
Tickets for La Ronde: available on their official website (option to add the fireworks seat only on the specific dates).
Alternative option: if you prefer to enjoy the fireworks from a beautiful boat cruise with an à La carte menu, tickets are available here on GetYourGuide.
Extra tip: parking is limited at La Ronde. The easiest and fastest way to get there is by taking the subway (Yellow Line) and hopping on the bus 767.
6. Hiking Mount Royal for sunrise.
You can visit Mount Royal whenever you want. In fact, there are many ways to reach the summit if hiking is not your cup of tea. You can take the bus 11 right outside Mont-Royal station which will drop you right at the top, or you can simply drive up. There is plenty of parking available up there. However, if you love being active like me, you can choose to hike, run, or bike using the designated 8.3-km multi-use trail.
If you have iron legs you can opt for a more challenging route by climbing the many stairs . Whichever path you choose, you’ll only need to walk a little bit further to reach one of the best view points of the city, the Kondiaronk Belvedere. From the parking or the bus stop, it’s just a 10-minute walk. Be there at least 30 minutes before sunrise to find a good spot and watch the sky change colors. The sun rises with incredible strength, showing off through the downtown buildings, making it a perfect location for a sunrise time-lapse. Keep in mind that it gets very windy up there, so dress accordingly (even in summer) and don’t forget your water bottle.

Quick Details:
View point: Kondiaronk Belvedere.
Bus: 11 (from Mont-Royal Station)
Stairs Path: Intersection of Avenue des Pins and Rue Peel.
Walking/Biking Path (Chem. Olmsted): Stars near the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Monument.
Parking address: 11088 Chem. Remembrance
7. Kayaking at Lachine Canal.
You can enjoy the Lachine Canal by biking, walking, or running, but if you want to experience Montreal like a true local, renting a kayak here is an absolute summer must. It’s a wonderfully active way to enjoy the calm waters, beautiful green spaces and the city’s cool industry heritage.
This activity holds a very special place in my heart because I used to do it with my beloved dog, Lola, riding right between my legs. The canal is incredibly pet-friendly, so if you have a furry friend, don’t hesitate to bring them along to enjoy the breeze of water! My top tip is to go during the mid-week for a quieter experience. Also, don’t forget your sunscreen and a fresh water bottle, as there’s very little shade while you’re paddling.

Quick Details:
Dates: From May to Mid- October.
Where: H2O Adventures. Across the pedestrian bridge from the Atwater Market.
Tickets: You can easily rent your equipment online through the H2O website ( online reservations only, walk-ins booking accepted if availability.
8. Experiencing Aura at Notre-Dame Basilica of Montréal.
If you visit the Old Montreal, to stop at the Basilica is a must. Weather you’re religious or not, this is a truly gem with its gothic style and beautiful colors. The place where the amazing Celine Dion got married years ago. To access the basilica I recommend you to check their schedule. They charged you a small amount to visit it but if you actually attend one of their masses you won’t be charged.
There is also the Aura experience, an immersive lights and orquestral music spectacle that gives you goosebumps. During 25 minutes the basilic architecture and its vaulted ceilings change with the lights giving you the impression that you’re actually somewhere else. The total experience lasts 45 minutes and I totally recommend you to book your tickets online in advance because they sells quickly. In addition, arrive early to find a central spot. First come, first served.

Quick Details:
Where: 110 Rue Notre Dame Ouest.
Tickets: Book through Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal website.
9. Biking around Montreal’s scenic paths.
Montreal is widely recognized as one of the best bike-friendly cities in North America. You can basically grab a bike and discover the city’s unique neighborhoods, beautiful parks and vibrant summer vibe. The city boasts over 1,000 kilometers of great bike paths, so you can easily hop on a local “Bixi” bike and start your own mini road trip.
My absolute favorite path is the one along The Old Port and Lachine Canal, and here’s my ultimate local secret: you have to make a stop at McAuslan Brewery (Terrasse St-Ambroise). It’s a gorgeous outdoor beer garden located right beside the bike path in Saint-Henri. You can order a local craft beer flight to taste different flavors, and trust me, you won’t regret it. What a perfect way to enjoy summer by staying active and then pausing to relax with a cold beer. That’s the true Montreal summer vibe. You can also stop by Atwater market for some local tastings.

Quick Details:
Dates: The Lachine Canal bike path’s are officially maintained Mid-April to Mid-November.
Where: Lachine Canal Bike path (stop at 5080 Saint-Ambroise St. for the brewery garden.
Tickets: You can pay per minute or buy a pass directly on the BIXI app. If you prefer a curated experience, you can book a guided city bike tour via GetYourGuide here.
10. Visiting the Gardens and watching the sunset at Saint-Joseph’s Oratory.
Saint Joseph’s Oratory is Canada’s largest church and features one of the largest church domes in the world. Standing proud on the mountain, it’s the highest building in Montreal and the only exception to the city’s strict height restriction code. Every year, more than 2 million visitors come to marvel at this gorgeous building, which was constructed in an Italian Renaissance style.
Once here, you can attend mass or simply explore the basilica, the crypt church, the beautiful votive chapel, and the original shrine. Don’t miss the tranquil Gardens of the Way of the Cross with its stunning fountain. Best of all, the terrace offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Montreal, making it one of the absolute best spots in the city to catch the sunset.

Quick Details:
Where: 3800 Queen Mary Road.

Parking: Paid parking available.
11. Chasing thrills and roller coasters at La Ronde.
La Ronde is an amusement park located on an island. If you are looking for adrenaline and fun, this is the place to be. It features 37 different rides with thrill levels ranging from 1 to 5. I highly recommend checking out the boomerang, Ednör, Goliath (with its 52-meter drop at over 110km/hour followed by 10 giant hills), and the Vampire. However, my favorite is Vol Ultime, with its giant swings spinning at 60 km/hour. From up there, you’ll get some of the best views of Montreal as you reach the height of the Jacques Cartier Bridge. It’s scary, oh yes! but once you get used to it, you’ll enjoy it, I promise!
Quick Details:
Where: Île Sainte-Hélène, 22 Chem. Mcdonald.
Tickets: Available on La Ronde’s website.
Extra tip: parking is limited at La Ronde. The easiest and fastest way to get there is by taking the subway (Yellow Line) and hopping on the bus 767.
12. Wandering around Montreal’s Botanical Garden.
If you enjoy nature and serene walks, this place is just for you. In summer, you’ll enjoy full bloom and peak biodiversity. It features over 22,000 plant species, 10 greenhouses, and 10 thematic spaces. Plan at least 3 to 4 hours to visit its Chinese, Japanese and First Nations gardens, as well as the greenhouses. Wear comfortable shoes, put on some sunscreen, and don’t forget to bring your water bottle.

Discover Montreal from above on board this massive Ferris wheel located at the Old Port. From up there, you’ll get a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and the St. Lawrence River. You can choose to go either during the day or at night. Honestly, I highly recommend going just before sunset to catch those gorgeous sky colors. If you are able to indulge yourself, the VIP cabin is amazing. It’s the only one featuring a glass floor, ultra-comfortable seats and zero waiting time.

Quick Details:
Where: 362 de la Commune St E.
Tickets: available via GetYourGuide for flexible booking and free cancellation.
14. Going paddleboarding at Parc Jean-Drapeau.
For a more adventurous activity you can go by yourself or with family and friends to paddle in the calm waters of Parc Jean-Drapeau. Here, you can rent a single board or a giant SUP to explore the lagoons of Jardin de Floralies, a unique protected environment right in the heart of the city. You’ll definitely enjoy Jean Drapeau Park from a very different perspective. No experience with paddleboarding? no worries! The team on-site will give you a safety briefing, teach you the basic techniques, and show you exactly how to paddle around the area.

Quick Details:
Where: Pavillon des activités nautiques at Parc Jean-Drapeau.

15. Wandering around to admire street art and trying a good poutine.
Street art has become a core part of Montreal’s identity. The city hosts two globally renowned annual graffiti festivals, so it’s incredibly easy to spot something beautiful on almost every block. You can even enjoy free audio tours available on the Art Public Montreal website. To experience the best of it, head to Saint Laurent Boulevard, the epicenter of Montreal’s street art scene. Afterward, walk up to La Banquise, the famous poutine restaurant that opens 24/7, to try this iconic French-Canadian dish served in dozen of different ways.

16. Going on board of Le Bateau Mouche for dinner.
Experiencing a city from the water is a must-do at least once in a lifetime. On this boat tour you’ll get to see Montreal’s highlights from a completely different perspective. Departing from the Old Port, the cruise takes you along the St. Lawrence River, lasting anywhere from 1 to 4 hours depending on the tour you choose. If you are short of time, you can take the 1-hour tour, which passes under the Jacques-Cartier Bridge, and offers great views of the Ferris Wheel, the Clock Tower, the Biosphere, la Ronde and much more.
As always I love to recommend what I’ve tried and personally enjoyed. There is an exceptional 3-hour dinner cruise that takes place at twilight, allowing you to enjoy refined dining experience. You can choose à la carte menu or a fantastic 4 to 6-course. Wine and cocktails are also available. At the end of the evening, there is a sound and light experience that completely transforms the atmosphere on the boat. A quick tip, pay a little extra for a window seat, you’ll love it.

17. Delighting yourself with a foodie tour at Jean Talon Market.
Jean Talon market is the largest market of its kind in Canada and, it is your must-go place for buying locally grown and artisanal Québec products. Here you’ll find delicious, sweet and tasty fruits, award-winning artisanal cheese, cured meats, local alcohol, and maple products. It’s my favorite place to buy peaches, plums and cheese.
Since it’s a massive market with so many vendors. I highly recommend you to book a guided foodie tour to truly savors the different flavors of Montreal and get to know what to try and buy later. You’ll taste different local products including cheeses, charcuteries, chocolate and coffee.

Montreal features the largest urban zipline in Canada, located right at the Old Port. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the city from a bird’s eye perspective. You’ll see the St. Lawrence River and the iconic buildings of Old Montreal from above. Feel the wind on your face and an amazing adrenaline boost while sliding down the 1.200-foot ( 366-meter) line from an 85-foot (26-meter) tower.
My personal recommendation is to go late in the afternoon; you might catch the sunset before you fly while the magical light changes. Remember to bring closed shoes, wear a ponytail and, leave your jewelry at home. GoPros are allowed if you have a wrist strap.

Quick Details:
Dates: From March 7th to December 13th.
Where: Hangar 16, 363 De la commune St E. Old Port of Montreal.

19. Relaxing at a Nordic Spa.
Hot, Cold, relax! This is how Montrealers do spa days in every season. The Nordic thermal experience has incredible benefits for both mind and body. In the rush of daily life, we all deserve a moment to pause and deeply relax, whether you’re a local or just discovering Montreal for the first time. There are several different Nordic spas in and around the city. Make sure to save at least 3 hours of your day to complete at least 3 thermal cycles: hot (sauna, steam room, hot whirlpool), cold plunge , and relaxation in the beautiful lounges.
If you prefer not to go too far from downtown, I recommend you Strom Nordic Nun’s island. However, if you prefer to be surrounded by a mountain and wide open spaces, Strom Saint-Hilaire is a must. Their packages typically include a towel and a bathrobe rental. Just don’t forget to pack your swimsuit, sandals, and a water bottle. If you do happen to forget them, no worries! You can easily buy them at their boutique.

20. Capturing a sunset at the Lachine Lighthouse.
This is a very picturesque spot and a quiet urban escape at the same time. People come here to have a picnic, enjoy nature while being close to the city, do some kayaking and even fish. It offers very easy access, with parking available as well as pedestrian and bike paths. In the summer, the surrounding green areas make this a stunning place to enjoy sunset colors reflecting over the water of the St. Lawrence River. A quick tip for you, bring mosquito repellent to enjoy this place peacefully.
